What is EigenLayer?
EigenLayer is a restaking protocol built on Ethereum that pioneered a new primitive: reusing staked ETH to extend cryptoeconomic security to additional networks and middleware. Rather than each new protocol bootstrapping its own validator set and token, EigenLayer lets existing ETH stakers opt-in to securing additional services in exchange for extra yield. These secured services are called Actively Validated Services, or AVSs, and include data availability layers, cross-chain bridges, oracles, keeper networks, and decentralized sequencers.
The protocol was founded by Sreeram Kannan, a former associate professor at the University of Washington, and developed through his company Eigen Labs. The whitepaper was published in early 2023, with the mainnet launching in stages throughout 2023 and 2024. Eigen Labs raised significant funding from major crypto investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Polychain Capital, Blockchain Capital, and Coinbase Ventures, with cumulative funding exceeding $150 million across rounds.
The EIGEN token became transferable in October 2024 after a lengthy non-transferable distribution phase. A substantial portion was allocated via 'stakedrop' to restakers and the broader Ethereum community, with additional allocations for investors, core contributors, and the Eigen Foundation. At peak, EigenLayer accumulated more than $15 billion in restaked ETH, briefly making it the largest DeFi protocol by total value locked and redefining the competitive landscape of Ethereum-based staking services.
The ecosystem now includes EigenDA, Eigen Labs' flagship data availability AVS designed to provide high-throughput data posting for rollups, alongside dozens of third-party AVSs at various launch stages. Liquid restaking tokens (LRTs) emerged as a parallel ecosystem, with platforms like EtherFi, Renzo, Kelp, and Puffer aggregating user deposits into restaking strategies and issuing tradable receipt tokens. This gave rise to the 'LRT wars' narrative throughout 2024, where protocols competed aggressively for deposit share.
EigenLayer has not been without controversy. The initial stakedrop airdrop criteria excluded users from several jurisdictions including the United States and Canada, prompting significant community backlash. Critics, including Ethereum Foundation researchers like Vitalik Buterin, have also raised concerns that restaking could introduce systemic risk to Ethereum consensus if AVSs gain enough scale to influence validator behavior or trigger correlated slashing events. Eigen Labs has addressed these concerns through its 'intersubjective' slashing framework, which separates objective consensus faults from subjective disputes that can be resolved through EIGEN token forking rather than direct ETH slashing.
Slashing functionality on AVSs went live in 2025, marking the transition from a purely opt-in rewards experiment to a fully operational security marketplace. Notable integrations and partnerships include collaborations with Celo's transition to an Ethereum L2, various rollup frameworks, and infrastructure providers building MEV and bridge services on top of restaked ETH. EIGEN is listed on major exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, OKX, and Bybit, and trades primarily against USDT and USDC pairs. Current TVL, circulating supply, and live market data are available on CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap, as these metrics fluctuate with market conditions and emission schedules.
Key Features of EigenLayer
- Ethereum Restaking Layer: EigenLayer enables native ETH stakers and liquid staking token holders to restake their assets, opting into additional slashing conditions to secure third-party protocols. This creates a shared security marketplace where validators can earn multiple yield streams from a single underlying stake.
- Intersubjective Slashing: EIGEN introduces a unique slashing model where subjective disputes are resolved through token forking rather than automatic penalties. If the community disagrees with a slashing outcome, EIGEN can fork to reverse unjust decisions, blending social consensus with cryptoeconomic security.
- AVS Marketplace: Protocols called Actively Validated Services can source security from EigenLayer's restaked ETH instead of bootstrapping native validator sets. This lowers the cost of launching secure middleware like oracles, bridges, DA layers, and decentralized sequencers.
- Operator Delegation: Restakers who don't run their own nodes can delegate to professional operators who manage AVS participation and slashing risk. This mirrors Ethereum's liquid staking model while giving users granular control over which AVSs their stake secures.
- EigenDA Integration: EigenDA, the flagship data availability service built on EigenLayer, offers high-throughput data posting for rollups at a fraction of Ethereum calldata costs. It demonstrates the protocol's ability to support production-grade infrastructure secured by restaked ETH.
EigenLayer Use Cases
- Securing Rollup Data: Layer 2 rollups can use EigenDA or similar AVSs for cheap, high-throughput data availability while inheriting economic security from restaked ETH. This reduces transaction costs for end users without sacrificing verifiability.
- Decentralized Bridges: Cross-chain bridges historically depend on small validator committees that are frequent hack targets. By building as an AVS, a bridge can leverage billions in restaked ETH as slashable collateral, making attacks economically irrational.
- Oracle Networks: Price feeds and off-chain data oracles can anchor their security to EigenLayer rather than issuing and bootstrapping a native staking token. This accelerates launches and gives data consumers stronger guarantees backed by ETH-denominated collateral.
- Decentralized Sequencing: Rollups seeking to decentralize their sequencer can tap a shared sequencing AVS secured by restakers. This removes single-operator censorship risk and provides fair ordering guarantees across multiple L2s simultaneously.
- Yield Stacking via LRTs: Users can deposit ETH into liquid restaking tokens like eETH, ezETH, or rsETH to passively earn Ethereum staking yield plus AVS rewards plus EIGEN and partner point programs. LRTs remain composable across DeFi, allowing further use in lending, DEX liquidity, and leveraged strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is restaking?
Restaking allows already-staked ETH to provide security for additional protocols beyond Ethereum consensus. Instead of each new protocol bootstrapping its own validator set and token, they can leverage Ethereum's existing stakers through EigenLayer. This creates a shared security marketplace and gives stakers additional yield sources.
What are AVSs?
Actively Validated Services are protocols that use EigenLayer's restaked ETH for security. Examples include EigenDA (data availability), cross-chain bridges, oracle networks, keeper services, and decentralized sequencers. Each AVS defines its own slashing conditions and reward structure for participating operators.
What is intersubjective slashing?
EIGEN introduces a novel slashing mechanism where disputes about AVS behavior are resolved through social consensus rather than automated penalties alone. If the community disagrees about a slashing decision, the EIGEN token can be forked to reverse unjust outcomes. This separates objectively verifiable faults from subjective disputes.
How do restakers earn?
Restakers earn standard ETH staking rewards plus additional rewards from each AVS they opt into securing. Rewards vary by AVS and typically include the AVS's native token, protocol fees, and sometimes EIGEN emissions. Liquid restaking platforms often stack further point programs on top for additional yield.
Can I stake EIGEN?
Yes, EIGEN can be staked to secure certain AVS categories that require EIGEN-denominated collateral for intersubjective slashing. Stakers delegate to operators through the EigenLayer interface and earn a share of AVS rewards. Availability of EIGEN staking on centralized platforms like Binance depends on regional listings.
Is EIGEN a good investment?
EIGEN's investment thesis rests on restaking becoming a foundational primitive for Ethereum middleware, which would drive demand for AVS security and governance. However, risks include token unlock schedules, competition from alternative restaking protocols like Symbiotic and Karak, and broader crypto market volatility. Always do your own research and consider position sizing carefully.
What is the minimum to buy EIGEN on Binance?
Binance typically enforces a minimum spot order size of around 5 USDT equivalent, though this varies slightly per pair. You can buy fractional amounts of EIGEN well below one full token, making it accessible for small test purchases. Check the EIGEN/USDT trading rules tab on Binance for the current minimum notional value.
