What is IOTA?
IOTA is an open-source distributed ledger technology purpose-built for the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) economy. Instead of a traditional blockchain, IOTA uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) called the Tangle, where each new transaction validates two previous ones. This design removes the need for miners, eliminates transaction fees, and enables the network to scale with usage rather than against it.
The project was founded in 2015 by David Sønstebø, Sergey Ivancheglo, Dominik Schiener, and Serguei Popov, and formally launched its network in 2016 after a 2015 crowdsale that raised roughly 1,337 BTC. Development is stewarded by the Berlin-based IOTA Foundation, a non-profit established in 2017 and recognized under German law, which coordinates research, core protocol development, and enterprise outreach. Co-founder Dominik Schiener has remained the most visible public face of the project following internal governance disputes that led to Sønstebø's departure in 2020.
IOTA's ecosystem has evolved significantly since its early days. The Chrysalis upgrade in 2021 modernized the protocol and prepared it for the Coordicide roadmap, and the Stardust upgrade paved the way for native assets and tokenization. In 2023 the Foundation launched Shimmer (SMR) as a staging and innovation network, followed by ShimmerEVM, bringing Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility and smart contracts into the IOTA stack. In 2024, IOTA announced a major rebase toward a Move-based smart contract platform, aligning with a broader push into real-world assets (RWAs), digital identity, and regulated tokenization use cases. A dedicated IOTA Foundation presence was also established in Abu Dhabi through the TLIP (Trade Logistics Information Pipeline) initiative with the TradeTech ecosystem.
On the partnership side, IOTA has a long track record of enterprise and public-sector collaborations. Bosch has integrated IOTA into industrial IoT research, Volkswagen demonstrated connected-car data sharing with the Tangle, and Dell Technologies partnered with IOTA on Project Alvarium, a data confidence fabric later contributed to the Linux Foundation. European initiatives include work with the European Commission's EBSI, the city of Taipei on digital identity cards, and Jaguar Land Rover on smart wallet experiments for vehicles. IOTA was also selected to participate in the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure pilot programs.
The project has not been without controversy. A 2018 research disclosure about the now-deprecated Curl-P hash function triggered a public dispute with MIT researchers, and a 2020 exploit of the Trinity wallet forced the Foundation to temporarily halt the Coordinator, the centralized component then used to protect the network. That incident accelerated the removal of the Coordinator, which was completed with the Coordicide milestone, making IOTA a fully decentralized network. Today, IOTA positions itself at the intersection of IoT, digital identity, and tokenized real-world assets, competing with layer-1 ecosystems while retaining its distinctive feeless, DAG-based architecture. Live price, market capitalization, and supply figures are best tracked on CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap, as these metrics update continuously.
Key Features of IOTA
- Feeless Tangle Transactions: IOTA's DAG-based Tangle removes miners and validators, allowing value and data transfers without transaction fees. This makes the network uniquely suited to microtransactions and high-frequency IoT data streams that would be uneconomical on fee-based chains.
- Parallel Transaction Validation: Because every new transaction confirms two previous ones, throughput grows as activity increases rather than bottlenecking a single block producer. This gives IOTA a horizontal scalability model aligned with the demands of billions of connected devices.
- Decentralized Identity (DID): IOTA Identity implements W3C-compliant decentralized identifiers and verifiable credentials directly on the Tangle. It is used in pilots for digital passports, supply chain credentials, and KYC reuse, giving developers a production-ready identity layer.
- Smart Contracts via ShimmerEVM: ShimmerEVM brings full Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility to the IOTA ecosystem, enabling Solidity developers to deploy existing dApps. This unlocks DeFi, NFTs, and tokenization while preserving IOTA's feeless L1 for settlement and data.
- Enterprise & RWA Focus: IOTA has consistently targeted enterprise, mobility, and public-sector use cases rather than pure speculation. Its roadmap emphasizes regulated real-world asset tokenization, trade finance, and digital product passports aligned with EU regulatory frameworks.
IOTA Use Cases
- Machine-to-Machine Payments: IoT devices such as EV chargers, sensors, and smart meters can exchange value autonomously over the Tangle without middlemen. The feeless model makes sub-cent payments between machines economically viable at scale.
- Supply Chain Traceability: IOTA's immutable ledger is used to track goods, certifications, and custody events across logistics networks. Projects like TLIP in East Africa use IOTA to digitize cross-border trade documents and reduce clearance times.
- Digital Product Passports: Ahead of EU regulations requiring digital product passports, IOTA is piloting solutions that embed verifiable lifecycle data into physical goods. This supports circular economy goals, recycling verification, and anti-counterfeiting.
- Connected Mobility: Automotive partners have explored IOTA for in-car wallets, tolling, charging, and data marketplaces between vehicles. The Tangle's low overhead fits the intermittent connectivity and high device count typical of mobility networks.
- Tokenized Real-World Assets: With smart contracts and native asset support, IOTA enables issuance of tokenized bonds, funds, and commodities under compliant frameworks. Its Abu Dhabi presence positions the project at the center of regulated RWA experimentation in the Middle East.

- Total Supply
- IOTA has a fixed maximum supply of approximately 4.6 billion IOTA tokens originally created at genesis in 2016. Following the Stardust upgrade, token denominations were simplified, with 1 IOTA now representing the base unit rather than the legacy MIOTA grouping.
- Circulating
- Following the 2024 rebase and staking rewards introduction, circulating supply differs from the original genesis amount and grows modestly through protocol rewards. Dynamic — see CoinGecko for live figures.
- Utility
- IOTA is used to transfer value across the Tangle, pay for smart contract execution on ShimmerEVM and related chains, secure the network via staking, and participate in governance. It also underpins tokenized assets, identity attestations, and enterprise data anchoring on the network.
- Emission
- Originally a fixed-supply asset with no inflation, IOTA introduced protocol-level staking rewards as part of its 2024 upgrade, adding a controlled issuance schedule to incentivize validators. Exact annual emission parameters are set by the protocol and can be reviewed in the IOTA Foundation's technical documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Tangle?
The Tangle is IOTA's DAG-based data structure that replaces traditional blockchains. Instead of grouping transactions into blocks, each new transaction validates two previous transactions, enabling parallel processing, zero base-layer fees, and throughput that scales with network usage.
Why is IOTA feeless?
IOTA's Tangle architecture eliminates the need for miners or validators who must be compensated through fees. Instead, each transaction performs a small amount of proof-of-work to help confirm previous transactions, making the network self-sustaining and suitable for IoT microtransactions.
What is Shimmer?
Shimmer is IOTA's staging and innovation network where new features are tested before being deployed to the main network. It has its own token (SMR) and hosts ShimmerEVM, an Ethereum-compatible smart contract chain used to pilot DeFi and tokenization use cases.
What IoT and enterprise partnerships does IOTA have?
IOTA has collaborated with Bosch on industrial IoT, Volkswagen on connected vehicles, Dell Technologies on data integrity through Project Alvarium, and Jaguar Land Rover on in-car wallets. It also works with public-sector initiatives including European Commission programs, Taipei digital identity, and the TLIP trade logistics pipeline.
Can I stake IOTA?
Yes. Following IOTA's 2024 protocol upgrade, native staking rewards were introduced, allowing holders to delegate or run validators to help secure the network and earn issuance. Community-run staking tools and the official wallet provide guidance, and users should review current parameters before locking tokens.
Is IOTA a good investment?
IOTA is a high-risk, high-volatility asset that trades well below its 2017 all-time high of $5.69 and is still executing on an ambitious smart contract and RWA roadmap. Its fortunes depend on IoT and tokenization adoption, competitive pressure from other L1s, and execution risk at the Foundation. Always do your own research and never invest more than you can afford to lose.
What is the minimum amount of IOTA I can buy on Binance?
On Binance Spot, minimum order sizes are denominated in the quote currency and are typically around 5 USDT for IOTA/USDT, though exact thresholds can change. You can check the current minimum by hovering over the order panel on the IOTA trading page, where Binance displays the minimum notional and lot size for each pair.
