OKX Review 2026 — Fees, Security & MiCA Licence
Deep-liquidity derivatives, a full options book and a MiCA licence for the EEA — where OKX shines in 2026, and where it falls short.

Our Verdict
Pros & Cons
Pros
Deep liquidity on majors with top-three derivatives volume most months. A full options book alongside perpetuals — rare among the large exchanges. Base fees at or below rivals (0.08% spot maker) with OKB and volume discounts. MiCA licence for the EEA plus VARA (Dubai) and MPI (Singapore) licences. Monthly proof-of-reserves published continuously since November 2022. Capable self-custody Web3 wallet with a multi-chain DEX aggregator. Built-in copy trading, grid and DCA bots.
Cons
Main exchange unavailable to US residents; OKX US is separate with a reduced product set. Settled a US Department of Justice matter in 2025 over historic unlicensed activity — resolved, but part of the record. Dense interface: first-time buyers face a real learning curve. Support turnaround can slow at volume peaks. Options and high leverage make it easy for the inexperienced to take on more risk than intended.

Fee tiers: OKB balances and 30-day volume move you down the schedule quickly; the largest tiers reach well below the base rates shown. Rates and promotions change — always confirm on OKX's official fee page before trading size.
Security & Trust
Proof-of-reserves every month
OKX has published a monthly Merkle-tree proof-of-reserves since November 2022 — one of the first major exchanges to commit to it after FTX, and among the most consistent since. Users can self-verify that their balances are included in each snapshot.
Cold storage and wallet hygiene
OKX states the large majority of customer assets sit in offline multi-signature cold storage, with online wallets sized to daily withdrawal flow. There has been no major publicly reported breach of the main exchange's wallets to date — a record worth noting, though never a guarantee.
Account-level protections
Two-factor authentication, anti-phishing codes, withdrawal address allowlisting and configurable withdrawal delays are all standard. Turn all of them on: most account losses at any exchange start with credentials, not the venue's wallets.
Licences and oversight
MiCA authorisation (Malta) brings EEA-wide conduct and custody requirements; VARA in Dubai and an MPI licence in Singapore add further supervised footholds. Regulation is not a safety guarantee, but it adds enforceable obligations most offshore venues never face.
No insurance-fund marketing here: unlike some rivals, OKX does not advertise a single headline emergency fund. Its risk story rests on reserves transparency, cold storage and licensing. Whatever the venue, long-term holdings belong in self-custody.

Derivatives & Leveraged Products — Important Risk Warning
Derivatives and leveraged products are complex and carry a high risk of rapid, substantial losses. Depending on the product and account rules, losses can exceed the initial margin or money committed. A stand-alone purchased option can lose its entire premium plus transaction costs; writing options, exercising into another position, or combining positions can create additional obligations. An uncovered call writer can face unlimited loss. Applicable legal protections can affect the loss boundary.
You should carefully consider whether you understand how derivatives work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. This content is for educational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice, investment advice, or a recommendation to trade derivatives.
Legal availability and regulatory protections depend on the product, service, provider and jurisdiction. In the EU, check the applicable investment-services rules, including MiFID II where relevant, and any product restrictions. Before trading, verify with the relevant regulator whether the provider has the permissions required for the service and whether the product may be offered to you. A website being accessible, or a product appearing on this website, does not establish authorization or eligibility.
