What is USD Coin?
USD Coin (USDC) is a fully reserved US dollar stablecoin issued by Circle, a Boston-based fintech regulated as a money services business in the United States and as an Electronic Money Institution under MiCA in the European Union. Each USDC in circulation is backed one-to-one by a basket of cash held in regulated banks and short-duration US Treasury bills, and Circle publishes monthly attestations from a Big Four accounting firm summarising reserve composition.
The token launched in September 2018 through the Centre Consortium, originally a joint venture between Circle, and is now governed exclusively by Circle following the consortium's dissolution in 2023.
USDC is multichain by design. It is natively issued on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Polygon, Stellar, Algorand, Tron, NEAR, Hedera, Flow, Aptos, Sui, and several other networks, with Circle operating the Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) so that supply can be burned on one chain and minted on another without bridge intermediaries. This makes USDC the de facto liquidity layer of compliance-focused DeFi: most major lending markets, perpetuals exchanges, and on-chain yield protocols quote in USDC alongside or instead of USDT.
The stablecoin's most stress-tested moment came in March 2023 during the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, where Circle disclosed that $3.3 billion of USDC reserves were stuck at SVB. USDC briefly traded as low as $0.87 on secondary markets before the US government guaranteed all SVB deposits over the weekend, allowing Circle to make all USDC holders whole and restore the peg within 72 hours. The episode prompted Circle to diversify its banking partners, shift more reserves into the Circle Reserve Fund (a SEC-registered government money market fund managed by BlackRock), and tighten its overnight cash management.
Under MiCA, USDC was the first major US-issued stablecoin to obtain full e-money authorisation in the EU (June 2024), allowing European exchanges to continue listing it under the new regulatory regime. Circle is also publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange following its 2025 IPO, which makes USDC's reserve management subject to the additional disclosure obligations of a US listed company.
Key Features of USD Coin
- Fully Reserved One-to-One Backing: Every USDC is matched by cash and short-term US Treasury bills held in regulated US institutions, with monthly attestations from a Big Four accounting firm. Reserves are managed in part through the SEC-registered Circle Reserve Fund advised by BlackRock.
- Native Multichain Issuance: USDC is natively issued on more than fifteen blockchains and unified through Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP), which burns supply on the source chain and mints it on the destination. Users avoid third-party bridges and the smart-contract risk those introduce.
- MiCA-Compliant in the European Union: Circle holds an Electronic Money Institution licence in France, making USDC fully authorised for issuance and distribution under MiCA. EU-licensed exchanges can list USDC without restriction following the 30 June 2024 stablecoin rules.
- Public Issuer with Disclosure Obligations: Circle is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange following its 2025 IPO. As a listed company it is subject to SEC disclosure requirements on reserve composition, capital adequacy, and material business risks, layered on top of its monthly USDC attestations.
- Deep Institutional and DeFi Liquidity: USDC is the dominant quote asset on regulated US exchanges and the preferred stablecoin in compliance-sensitive DeFi protocols such as Aave, Morpho, Spark, and Compound. Aggregate on-chain liquidity supports billion-dollar swaps with minimal price impact.
USD Coin Use Cases
- Compliance-Friendly Trading Pair: Regulated venues such as Kraken and EU MiCA-licensed exchanges quote large parts of their order book in USDC. Traders use it to sit out volatility without incurring fiat off-ramp friction.
- Cross-Chain Liquidity via CCTP: Treasuries and payment companies use USDC as the settlement asset across Ethereum, Solana, Base, and other chains, burning and minting through Circle's CCTP rather than relying on lock-and-mint bridges.
- Institutional DeFi Lending: USDC is the largest stablecoin pool on Aave, Morpho, and Spark. Yield typically tracks short-term US Treasury rates plus a leverage premium, making it a natural home for crypto-native cash management.
- Cross-Border Payments and Remittances: Companies pay contractors and run treasury operations in USDC across Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South-East Asia, where access to US dollars is limited but USDC rails are available 24/7 through Solana, Stellar, and Tron.
- On-Chain Settlement for Tokenised Assets: USDC is the default settlement leg for tokenised US Treasury products (USYC, BUIDL, M0) and tokenised credit funds, where instant 24/7 settlement is a key advantage over traditional bank rails.

- Total Supply
- USDC has no fixed cap. Supply expands when authorised participants deposit USD with Circle and contracts when they redeem. Total circulating supply varies between roughly $25 billion and $50 billion depending on broader crypto market conditions.
- Circulating
- All circulating USDC is mirrored one-to-one by reserves; there is no pre-mine, founder allocation, or vesting schedule.
- Utility
- USDC is the unit of account for trading, lending, and payments across centralised and decentralised crypto venues. Holding USDC does not confer governance rights — it is a payment and savings instrument, not an investment token.
- Emission
- USDC is minted on demand at par when fiat is deposited and burned at par when fiat is redeemed. There is no inflationary emission curve; supply changes are driven entirely by user demand.

USDC has held its $1 peg almost continuously since launch in September 2018, with one significant deviation: a 36-hour break in March 2023 after Circle disclosed reserve exposure to Silicon Valley Bank, during which USDC traded as low as $0.87 before recovering once the US government guaranteed SVB depositors. Since then USDC has diversified its banking partners, shifted reserves into the Circle Reserve Fund managed by BlackRock, obtained MiCA authorisation in the EU, and become a publicly traded company in 2025.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is USDC fully backed by US dollars?
Yes, USDC is backed one-to-one by a combination of cash held in regulated US banks and short-duration US Treasury bills held in the Circle Reserve Fund (a SEC-registered government money market fund managed by BlackRock). Circle publishes monthly attestations from a Big Four accounting firm summarising the reserves, and as a US-listed company Circle is subject to additional public disclosure obligations on its reserve management.
How does USDC differ from USDT?
Both target a $1 peg, but USDC is issued by a US-regulated and EU-authorised issuer (Circle) with monthly Big Four attestations and SEC-registered reserve management, while USDT (Tether) is offshore and historically less transparent, though it now publishes quarterly attestations as well. USDC's regulatory profile makes it the default stablecoin for institutional DeFi and US-compliant venues; USDT has deeper liquidity in offshore derivatives and emerging-market spot markets.
What happened during the SVB depeg in March 2023?
Circle disclosed that $3.3 billion of USDC reserves were held at Silicon Valley Bank when it failed. USDC traded as low as $0.87 over the weekend before the US government backstopped all SVB depositors, restoring the peg within 72 hours. Circle has since diversified its banking partners and increased the share of reserves held at the Federal Reserve via the Circle Reserve Fund.
On which blockchains is USDC available?
USDC is natively issued on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Polygon, Stellar, Algorand, Tron, NEAR, Hedera, Flow, Aptos, Sui, and several other networks. Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) lets users burn USDC on one chain and mint it on another without a third-party bridge, reducing bridge-hack risk.
Is USDC compliant with MiCA in the EU?
Yes. In June 2024 Circle obtained Electronic Money Institution authorisation in France, making USDC the first major US-issued stablecoin to be fully MiCA-compliant in the European Union. This means EU-licensed exchanges can continue to list USDC for European users under the new stablecoin regime that took effect on 30 June 2024.
