What is IOTA?
IOTA is a distributed ledger technology designed for the Internet of Things (IoT). Unlike traditional blockchains, IOTA uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) called the Tangle, enabling feeless transactions and scalability.
The project focuses on machine-to-machine (M2M) microtransactions, data integrity, and smart contracts for IoT devices. IOTA has partnered with major companies including Bosch, Volkswagen, and Dell for IoT solutions.
IOTA transitioned to a fully decentralized network with the Stardust upgrade and is developing ShimmerEVM for smart contract capabilities and cross-chain interoperability.
IOTA Tokenomics
IOTA has a fixed supply of approximately 4.6 billion tokens with no mining or staking inflation. All tokens were created at genesis. The feeless nature of the Tangle makes it ideal for microtransactions between IoT devices.
IOTA Historical Price Performance
IOTA reached $5.69 in December 2017 during the ICO boom, driven by IoT hype. After a prolonged bear market and internal governance challenges, the project refocused on decentralization and smart contract capabilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Tangle is IOTA's DAG-based data structure. Instead of blocks, each transaction confirms two previous transactions, enabling parallel processing, zero fees, and theoretically infinite scalability.
IOTA's Tangle architecture eliminates the need for miners or validators collecting fees. Each transaction does a small amount of proof-of-work to confirm previous transactions, making the network self-sustaining.
Shimmer is IOTA's staging network where new features are tested before deployment to the main network. It has its own token (SMR) and serves as an innovation space for the IOTA ecosystem.
IOTA has worked with Bosch (industrial IoT), Volkswagen (connected vehicles), Dell Technologies (data marketplace), and various smart city projects across Europe.
